Circular economy

Europe generates massive amounts of waste, which is destroying our habitat and has significant negative impacts on human health and the environment. According to Eurostat and European Environment Agency, 4.8 tons of waste are produced by European citizens each year, while 51% of municipal waste is not recycled. By promoting industrial symbiosis, COSMIC aims to reduce waste, optimise material flows and support circular economy practices that benefit industries and communities.

Pilot location in Portugal

This pilot integrates household waste separation data into renewable energy community (REC) operation, using AI and computer vision to enhance carbon footprint tracking, promote circular economy practices, and empower users with personalised insights and support for better recycling and energy decisions.

Core technologies:

  1. Home Energy Management System (HEMS)
  2. RECreation platform for managing Renewable Energy Communities

AI solutions from Third Parties:

  • Sustainability indicator based on waste separation for REC dynamic allocation factors determination

  • Waste separation classification

Problem addressed: Lack of integrated visibility into the environmental impact of households, especially when it comes to waste generation and correct separation related to energy use and carbon emissions

Expected outcomes: Improved sustainability and energy efficiency in REC operations through the promotion of correct waste separation by allocating more energy to the community members who recycle better.
