About the project

What is COSMIC? 

COSMIC is a three-year European project that demonstrates how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data technologies can drive the optimisation of energy resources across industrial, urban, and residential sectors, in alignment with the goals of the European Green Deal. 

COSMIC will test solutions in real-life settings across 15 pilot sites in 6 countries. With mentoring and support, these solutions are shaped into market-ready tools, ready to scale across Europe’s energy systems. 

COSMIC is funded by the Horizon Europe programme. 

The project’s objectives: 

• Optimise energy use through Big Data and AI by integrating innovative SME solutions into technological platforms (CTFs) to create scalable Integrated AI Systems (IAIS). 

• Implement 15 pilots across key sectors to enhance resource efficiency, in alignment with the Green Deal. 

• Develop European scaling strategies for industrial ecosystems, facilitating IAIS replication and strengthening the competitiveness of Europe’s AI and data-driven industries. 

Expected outcomes: 

• Contribution to the achievement of the European Green Deal 

• Democratization of the AI market: lowering barriers to deploy innovative solutions. 

• Creation of new industrial ecosystems that can be replicated across Europe. 

• Positioning the EU as a leader in AI and digital innovation   

Our approach: 

1. We identify and support cutting-edge AI and data-based innovations from startups and SMEs through two competitive Open Calls, targeting clearly defined sustainability challenges across various sectors. 

2. These selected solutions are integrated with core technologies and tested in 15 real-life pilot sites, enhancing energy and resource efficiency for cities, neighbourhoods and households. 

3. To maximise impact, we focus on scalability and replicability, sharing outcomes with industry, policymakers and communities to foster broad adoption.
